Why Social Media Social Media now permeates every aspect of society and our lives. – Connect w/Family and Friends – Learn what is going on – Discover new things – Engage on issues that are important to us The cheapest way to reach our audience by the thousands. – Information – Calls to Action A critical element of the overall Marketing effort of an organization – without it you are missing the boat.

The Basics for The Alliance Know Your Audience – Who are you trying to reach (members, donors, academia, job seekers, public) – How large is my potential audience (research similar organizations and social media size to set your target) – What are their interests (research their posts, interests (both live and virtual)) Know Your Messages (what do you want to convey) – Create the messages similar to a marketing campaign (long, medium and short-term) – Engage the community – don’t talk to them, talk with them Then, “Pull the Trigger” – Social Media is inexpensive, but it is not free…MAKE THE INVESTMENT to do it right – Better to avoid Social Media, than do it wrong
