3. Technology  Charles Lindbergh  First person to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean  Left New York City on May 20, 1927 and landed in Paris, France 33 ½ hours later  His airplane was called The Spirit of St. Louis

4. Jazz Age  Louis Armstrong  Famous jazz musician  Jazz: became the most popular form of music in the 1920’s. Jazz was influenced by African Americans

5. Harlem Renaissance  Many artists, musicians and authors moved to Harlem, New York  They worked together to create great works of art, music and literature.  Langston Hughes  Wrote about the lives of African Americans

6. Sports  Babe Ruth  Radios were becoming common in homes, which made sports more popular  Babe Ruth (famous baseball player) helped make baseball a popular sport

7. Prohibition  Prohibition-A complete ban on alcohol  18 th amendment-started prohibition  Why do this?  Why didn’t it work?  21 st amendment- ended prohibition Who were Bootleggers?

9. Stock Market  People can buy stock in a company  If the company is making money, stock prices will increase, and the people who own stock will make money.

10.  In 1929 prices of stock began to fall  People panicked and sold their stocks  This dropped prices further causing a loss of a lot of money very quickly

11. Black Tuesday  The worst day of money loss/stock selling occurred on Tuesday October 29  Nicknamed Black Tuesday

12. Herbert Hoover  President of the United States 1929-1933  President when the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began

13. The Great Depression  A time of high unemployment and financial struggle in the United States  What caused the Great Depression?  Stock Market Crash  Misuse of credit  Run on the banks

15. Hoovervilles  Many people blamed President Herbert Hoover for the Great Depression  Homeless people grouped together and made homes out of cardboard and other supplies  These became known as Hoovervilles

16. Franklin D. Roosevelt  Franklin Roosevelt was elected president  His goal was to get the United States out of the Great Depression  New Deal Program

17. The New Deal  A group of programs designed to end The Great Depression  Goals: Relief, Recovery and Reform

18. Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)  Work camps for men ages 18-25  Men received housing, food and $30 month salary  Planted trees, created new parks, repaired parks, and built roads

19. Works Progress Adminstration (WPA)  Employed people to build roads, schools, bridges, parks and airports  Created millions of jobs Road construction project

20. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)  Employed people to build 50 dams along rivers in the South  Built power plants to provide electricity to home in the South for the first time

21. Social Security Administration  Gives money to the elderly, disabled and unemployed

22. Dust Bowl  A severe drought (a long period without raid) occurred in the Great Plains  This made soil very dry, creating dust storms  This area became known as the Dust Bowl  The severe drought hurt farmers became they were unable to farm
