Plot Structure The five stages to a fiction story Plot is a series of events in a fiction story. The plot usually centers on a conflict, or struggle, faced by the main character.

Story Vocabulary Protagonist is a main character in a story, play, or novel. They are involved in the main conflict of the story Antagonist is the force working against the protagonist, or main character, in story, play, or novel Ex. Batman Ex. The Joker

Story Vocabulary Setting in a story, play or novel is the time and place of the action Complications are something that introduces, usually unexpectedly, some difficulty, problem, change, etc. Ex. Gotham City Ex. The Joker kidnaps Rachel Dawes

Plot Structure The five stages to a fiction story 1. Provides important background info and introduces the setting and important characters 2. Stage where the conflict develops. Events occur that make the conflict more complicated. 3. Occurs toward the end of the story and is the point of greatest interest. The conflict is resolved 4. The story begins to draw to a close. The events show the results of the climax 5. The final outcome of the story is fully worked out at this stage

Conflict Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces. Almost every story has a main conflict– a conflict that is the story’s focus External Conflict involves a character who struggles with a force outside of him- or herself, such as nature or another character Internal Conflict is one that occurs within a character. A struggle within the mind or heart.

Types of Conflict Internal Conflict Pg. 29 Man vs. Self Occurs when a character is struggling with themselves on the inside. Ex. A moral dilemma

Types of Conflict External Conflict Pg. 29 Man vs. Man Occurs when the main character in the story has a struggle with one or more characters. Ex. Batman fights with The Joker Man vs. Nature Occurs when the main character finds themselves at odds with forces of nature. Ex. Man trying to survive a hurricane Man vs. Society Occurs when the main character has string feelings or beliefs that go against the norm of society. Ex. Katniss against the capitol
