Breed characteristics
Beef cattle breed The modern Hereford is colored dark red to red- yellow, with a white face, crest, dewlap, and underline. Most have short thick horns that usually curve down at the sides of the head, but there is a polled strain in North America and UK. Mature males may weigh up to 1,800 pounds, while mature females may weigh around 1,200. They are maternal.

History The Hereford has long been the icon of the cattle industry.
Of British origin. In 1817, Henry Clay imported the first three Herefords to the United States. The Hereford cow has not been crossbred. 20-25 years is the life expectancy. Domesticated about 10,500 years ago. mainly for meat production.

Daily care Clean, fresh water must always be available.10 to 20 gallons of water a day. Salt and mineral licks should always be available to cattle. Eat mostly hay or pasture. Need to be vaccinated yearly for rabies and several other contagious diseases. Branding or ear tags are used mainly for herd identification.

Breeding Technologies
In a breeder farm operation, the main interest of the raisers is to produce animals for breeding purposes. Calves are raised until they are ready for breeding. Purebred animals are usually used in this type of breeding.

Stages of Growth Yearling: can either be a female or a male that has reached a year old. Calf: newborn offspring that depends on milk and mother for growth. Heifer: female cow that has not had a calf. First time heifer: a female that has given birth to her first offspring. Cow: female that has given birth second calf, she will remain a cow until the end of the life cycle. Bull: sexually mature male cow, he will remain a bull until either castration when he will be called a steer or until the end of his life cycle
