11 HOW DO LDCS AND MDCS CONTRIBUTE TO GLOBAL SLAVERY? LDCS UP TO 1.5 MILLION WORKERS ARE FORCED BY THE GOVERNMENT IN UZBEKISTAN TO PICK COTTON EVERY YEAR AT HARVEST TIME MDC ALMOST 50% OF CLOTHES SOLD IN U.S. ARE MADE IN CHINA AND BANGLADESH THE TOP IMPORTERS FROM UZBEKISTAN

12 HOW DO LDCS AND MDCS CONTRIBUTE TO GLOBAL SLAVERY? LDCS PALM OIL IS HARVESTED AND PURIFIED BY SLAVE LABOR IN INDONESIA, MALAYSIA AND SIERRA LEONE MDC PALM OIL USED IN 70% OF COSMETICS (MAKE-UP) AND FOODS

13 VOLUNTARY AND FORCED MIGRATION VOLUNTARY MIGRATION A PERSON WILLING MOVES FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER FORCED MIGRATION A PERSON MOVES FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER UNWILLINGLY.

15 OTHER FACTORS FOR SLAVERY LITERACY/EDUCATIONGENDER GAP THE ABILITY TO READ AND WRITE COUNTRIES WITH HIGH RATES OF SLAVERY ALSO HAVE LOW LITERACY RATES: PERCENTAGE OF POPULATION THAT CAN READ AND WRITE INEQUALITY BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN COUNTRIES WITH DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN IN EDUCATION, EARNINGS, AND SOCIAL STATUS ARE AT HIGH RISK FOR SLAVERY.
