World’s largest country. Spans two continents. Majority of population lives on European side, but the majority of Russia’s land is in Asia. Siberia- area in Northeastern Russia- cold climate with forests Northernmost Russia is tundra- frozen desert where even the ground is frozen most of the year.

Area south of Russia: Countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Armenia, Georgia. Mountainous terrains: Ural Mts., Pimars Mts. Deserts: Kara Kum (Black Sand), Kyzyl Kum (Red Sand) Steppes- treeless grasslands good for grazing herds.

The Arctic Ocean,north of Russia, is frozen for most of the year. Major rivers in Asian Russia are the Ob and Lena. Caspian Sea the largest inland sea & the shrinking Aral Sea Lake Baikal: oldest & deepest lake in the world. 1/5 of the world’s fresh water.

The Ural Mountains separate European and Asian Russia, while the Pamir Mountains separate Russia from China.

Most of Russia has long, cold winters and short mild summers. Subarctic- cool humid summers, with long cold winters, ½ the land covered in snow for 6 months, the other ½ has permafrost. Tundra- gets as low as -90° F. Deserts get as hot as 120° F.
