1. RUN ON SENTENCES 2. INCOMPLETE SENTENCES 3. PAST/PRESENT TENSE CONFUSION Summaries- General Observations Friday October 14th

1. Run On Sentences Jane went to the store and she ate some food but saw a boy who was also hungry so she gave him a sandwich but he didn’t want it so she was sad.

Jane went to the store, and she ate some food. She saw a boy who was also hungry, so she gave him a sandwich. However, he didn’t want it, so she was sad.

To avoid run on sentences Think about how many actions are happening. Try to limit your sentence to TWO ACTIONS Simple is always better!

2. Incomplete sentences that don’t start with a subject But he went to the store. So she ate a sandwich. And I went home with my brother.

What makes a sentence? He went to the store. She ate a sandwich. I went home with my brother. (main clause)S + V + complete idea

3. past/ present tense confusion He went to the store (Past). She eats some chocolate and says “hello” (Present). The story ends with him saying goodbye. Always have agreement. Generally, it’s easier to write summaries in past tense.

TIPS PROOF READ! USE SPELL CHECK! FOCUS ON SIMPLE SENTENCES FIRST BEFORE ADDING COMPLEX WRITING

PROMPT EXERCISE The monkey and the little boy story Remember when summarizing: 1. Two actions 2. Subject first (he, the boy, it, the monkey) 3. Past tense
