Extremophiles phile - lover of
3
What is an Extremophile? An extremophile is an organism that thrives under "extreme" conditions. They are prokaryotes in the kingdom Archaea.
4
Terms Used to Describe Extremophiles suffix –phile, meaning "lover of," prefix specific to their environment For example, acidophiles are organisms that love (phile) acid (acido).
5
Halophiles Halophiles- these microbes live in salty environments (dried lake-beds and salt-flats)
6
Live in hot springs that reach temperatures of 80º C (177ºF) Thermophiles
7
Archaebacteria The orange scum is archaeabacteria found in Rotorua, New Zealand The rusty color on the rocks of this volcanic pool lives near mount Vesuvius in Italy.
8
Black smokers (above) can produce temperatures of 350 C (662 F), but archaean microbes are still able to thrive here
9
blue-green algae, blue-green bacteria or Cyanophyta is a phylum of bacteria that obtain their energy through photosynthesis. Cyanobacteria is important to the marine nitrogen cycle Cyanobacteria is an important primary producer in the ocean Cyanobacteria
