Why we need a ventilation System? Amoebas don’t need a ventilation system because they are in an environment where oxygen is always at a higher concentration outside the cell than inside the cell so oxygen will continue to diffuse into cell. Humans bodies are to thick and only our outside cells are exposed to air. Diffusion wouldn’t be efficient. A ventilation system is needed to get oxygen to cells deep in your body tissues. We also need to keep the concentration gradient there to make sure oxygen diffuses in the right direction.

Factors that impact it – Sex – Height – Smoking – Physical Activity – Altitude Tidal volume – Volume of air inhaled and exhaled with each breath Vital capacity – Maximum volume inhaled and exhaled during forced breathing Residual volume – Air left in alveoli after forced exhalation

O 2 transport – Low solubility of O 2 in H 2 O – Respiratory pigments are proteins with metal atoms Hemoglobin – Fe Hemocyanin – Cu Allow reversible binding of O 2 Drop in pH results in a lowered affinity of hemoglobin for O 2

Asthma-is an inflammatory disorder of the airways Triggers -pollen, smoke, dust or mold, a cold, or even exercise Air moves freely through the airways. Two main affects on your lungs: -first is inflammation, airway tissues irritated, red, and swollen. Inflammation is always there, even when you are not having a lot of symptoms. When the tissues become inflamed, mucus also plugs the airways, decreasing airflow. -second is constriction, tightening of muscles around your airways. Its harder for air to move in and out of the lungs Affects-asthma attack, wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath. Daily treatment plan, you can reduce your symptoms and help prevent future attacks.

Anemia-is the lack of oxygenated blood in the body SYMPTOMS Paleness of the skin. Paleness of the eyelids. Paleness of the lips. Paleness of the fingernails. Spoon-shaped fingernails due to lack of iron. Paleness of the gums. Brittle hair. Increased respiration. Causes: Anemia is caused by a lack of oxygen in the blood. The main cause is a lack of iron (main component of hemoglobin) in the blood. TREATMENTS A balanced diet, eating healthy food especially those that contain a high amount of iron. Some recommendations: lentil soup, spinach, egg yolks, dried prunes, broccoli, turnips and whole grains (with hulls).

Where is CO found? CO is found in combustion fumes, such as those produced by cars and trucks, small gasoline engines, stoves, lanterns, burning charcoal and wood, and gas ranges and heating systems. What are the symptoms of CO poisoning? The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. High levels of CO inhalation can cause loss of consciousness and death. How does CO poisoning work? Red blood cells pick up CO quicker than they pick up oxygen. If there is a lot of CO in the air, the body may replace oxygen in blood with CO. This blocks oxygen from getting into the body, which can damage tissues and result in death.
