How are you going to get there? Do you need to bring anything? What other things to do you need to think about or do before you head to paradise? Share with the group

The differences between the four main types of colleges and universities The degrees offered at each type of college and university Potential career options that each degree can lead to The differences in the standardized admissions tests required and accepted at each type of college and university

In the US these words can be used synonymously The real differences Colleges tend to be smaller Can offer all degrees universities do There is an important distinction when it comes to community colleges that we will get into later Universities may have multiple colleges within them Can offer all degrees from certifications to PhD We will use “college” to describe all education that is after high school

Length of Time: 8 months to 2 years Type of Learning: Hands-on with some classroom/lecture work Potential Careers: culinary arts, accounting, digital and media arts, early childhood education, hairstylist, medical technicians, IT/Computer technicians, court reporter, etc.

Length of Time: 2-3 years Type of Learning: more classroom/lecture with a small amount of hands-on learning Potential Careers: nurse, teacher assistant, dental hygienist, radiation therapist, construction manager, paralegal, etc.

Length of Time: 4-6 years Type of Learning: more classroom/lecture with a small amount of hands-on learning Potential Careers: financial analyst, afterschool coordinator, engineer, business managers, art museum curator, web designer, etc.

Master’s Degree (graduate degree) Professional Certification Doctoral Degree Medical Doctor (MD) Length of Time: 1-8+ years Type of Learning: Independent research and hands-on learning with some classroom/lecture Potential Careers: upper management personnel, counselors, college professors, CEO, business executives, principals, doctors, etc.
