I. Spreading out A.Railroads impacted tension that caused the Civil War 1.KS-NE Act traded popular sovereignty for a northern route for the transcontinental RR B.Congress could vote however they wanted during the Civil War 1.No Southerners were there to vote against a northern route

I. Spreading out C.Pacific Railway Act of 1862 1.Gave land grants to build the railroad 2.Provided a route and land to sell to make money to afford building D.The Transcontinental Railroad was completed at Promontory Point, Utah in 1869

I. Spreading out D.Homestead Act 1.For $18 and a 5 year promise to farm, settlers got land 2.RR gave farmers access to Eastern markets 3.RR gave industry access to Western resources

II. Native Americans A.Buffalo herds could easily damage RR 1.RR companies encouraged the killing of the buffalo 2.Plains Indians followed the herds and could no longer sustain themselves

Native Americans B.Whites wanted cheap western land w/market access thru the RR 1.Native Americans were forced to sign bad treaties 2.Smaller reservations a)Taken advantage of by Indian Agents sent to help them 3.Some NAs resist and are pursued by the US Cavalry 4.Others are pushed out b/c their land has precious minerals
