Lesson 20 Day 4 Review www.spellingcity.com

Read silently then you will read aloud with me. Marlon stopped running to catch his breath. Mom had a tough day at work. Taking walks is good for my health. I am waiting for a phone call from my cousin. Lin and Karin found seats in the rear of the bus. I dialed the wrong number when I called Grandma.

Text Features We will practice reading a social studies text book. Open your book to pages 154 and 155. Look at those pages. As you read these pages, you should look for ideas you can use the next time you read one of your textbooks. Read the first 2 paragraphs under the heading Reading Your Social Studies Book.

Discuss Text Features Titles ◦ Tell what each lesson will focus on. Vocabulary Words ◦ Written in dark print and highlighted. Maps ◦ Usually have a title and labels to give information about the places in the lesson.

Review Let’s review our focus strategies (these help us think as we read). Reading Ahead may give readers information to help them understand something that is confusing. Answering Questions helps a reader find the answer “right there” in the text. Sometimes, you might have to use what you already know.

Read and Respond Read 156 – 157. After scanning the pages, what features tell you quickly what these two pages are about? What feature within the body of the text will give me the definitions of new social studies vocabulary? When I decided to read ahead (looking at the question under the map first) it helped me find the answer and concentrate on Alaska.

Use Reference Sources http://www.pcboe.net/les/elderweb/Secon d%20Grade.htm http://www.pcboe.net/les/elderweb/Secon d%20Grade.htm PowerPoint Vocabulary

Grammar Adjectives that end with –er compare just 2 things. Adjectives that end with –est compare 3 or more things. Which of these sentences is correct? ◦ Keira can run faster than her older brother. ◦ This is the riper banana in the bunch.

Practice correcting these: The kitten has softest fur than its mother. The whale is the larger of all the mammals. I made a wish on the brighter star in the sky. Cereal is crunchiest than oatmeal.
