May 2, 2003Maury Goodman, White Paper for Reactor Workshop 9 My view of the world Maury Goodman-30-April-2003 sin 2 2 13 ~ 0.02 An ambitious unambiguous reactor experiment costing ~$60M can and should be done first/early An off-axis experiment to exploit CP,… should be planned but will be “next generation” ~$150M plus beam improvements ~$150M That planning has started and needs to continue This is why I am working on both projects
10
May 2, 2003Maury Goodman, White Paper for Reactor Workshop 10 Warning If my view of the world is right, many beam experimenters will recognize it and jump-in or try to. I am an early manifestation of that. How big can/should such an experiment be? Will other US collaborations start? Forced marriages later?
11
May 2, 2003Maury Goodman, White Paper for Reactor Workshop 11 What cost to aim for? Perhaps this experiment will be better received at $60M than $40M. ] Direct comparison with off-axis at P5 ] Will still be faster/cheaper/smaller ] More exposure ] ??? Propose to SAGENAP and expect a head-to-head P5 comparison with off-axis

May 2, 2003Maury Goodman, White Paper for Reactor Workshop 12 White Paper (other than content) Important not to lose Momentum Can be used to increase visibility We can start to work together as a proto-collaboration in preparing it Measurable output Can be used for R&D proposal(s)

May 2, 2003Maury Goodman, White Paper for Reactor Workshop 13 White Paper-content Step towards a proposal Can flush out a variety of –Sites –Possible physics reaches –Possible costs –Systematic Error Issues Can be used as basis for proposal

May 2, 2003Maury Goodman, White Paper for Reactor Workshop 16 Proto-collaboration organization Assuming that we want to form a proto-collaboration –MINOS has executive committee and institutional board –I would propose a physics committee of young firebrands for planning (Link, Reyna, Heeger) and a policy committee for politics (with more senior physicists).

May 2, 2003Maury Goodman, White Paper for Reactor Workshop 17 To Do List Identify writers for White Paper Choose a (temporary) name? Monthly phone meetings? Organize next meeting? Agree on proto-collaboration? Agree on Committees? Organize Software? –Site Visits? –Contact Funding Agencies?
