Let’s Get Savvy about Technology Mrs. George Dondero School

You will learn: Good, sensible behavior when using the Internet Ways to keep yourself (and your computer) safe when using the Internet How and why it is appropriate to give credit to others

Technology! What do you think of when you think of the word “technology?” Do you know what “technology” means? “The use of science to solve problems.” And: It means anything that has been made by people. It means things we use, things that make our lives easier.

Which of the following are forms of technology?

Netiquette=Internet Etiquette* *Etiquette means good behavior Netiquette means good behavior on the Internet Source: http://www.its.queensu.ca/webct/facultyguide/ resources/netiquette.html http://www.its.queensu.ca/webct/facultyguide/ resources/netiquette.html

Passwords Keep yours to yourself! If someone finds out what yours is, please tell an adult. Do not try to find out anyone else’s! If you do, please tell an adult. Passwords protect you and your work. Let them do their job.

Permissions At school, staff members may enter your document folder. Students may never go into other students’ folders. Students are not allowed to add or delete information of any kind in public folders unless asked to do so by a staff member.

Digital Pictures You may not take pictures of other students without their parents’ or guardian’s permission. If someone asks you for pictures of yourself or others, say NO, unless you have permission from your parents. If someone takes pictures of you with a cell phone or otherwise, tell the nearest adult. You need to protect yourself, your privacy.

Personal Space ALWAYS come to the lab with clean hands! Please, no bags of ice! When in the computer lab, PLEASE do not touch other’s mouse or keyboard. Please use the orange skins when having keyboarding lessons.

Plagiarism Plagiarism is stealing other people’s work and putting your name on it. Plagiarism is very serious! You may not take things off the web, words or images, without getting permission. ALWAYS cite* your sources. *Cite means to give credit.

Citing Images from Web Description or title of image. [Online image] Available http://address/filename, Date. EX: Two beluga whales. [Online image] Available http://www.seaworld.org/beluga_whales /beluga_col.gif, January 5, 2000.

Resources for Citing Text and Images http://www.tekmom.com/cite/ http://www.calvin.edu/library/knightcite/

Music on the Web Music is available for 99 cents a song. Stealing music from the Web is illegal. Do not believe anyone who tells you it’s ok. You could get caught and have to pay a huge fine!

Computer Viruses Viruses can be picked up on websites or through email. Be careful where you click and what you click on. Make sure your computer at home has virus protection software and that it is updated.

Info about Viruses Definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_virus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_virus Virus Hoaxes: http://www.vmyths.com/ http://www.vmyths.com/

Surfing the Web At school (and maybe at your house) we have ‘filters.’ Filters block some websites and pictures, or images, from appearing on your computer screen. Sometimes, they block content we wish we could see; sometimes content gets through that shouldn’t.

More Surfing… You need to use your good judgment when using the Internet for research or fun. If something makes you feel uncomfortable, close out the page! If you are caught in a never ending loop, shut the computer down and ask an adult to help get you back on track.

Instant Messaging and Chat Rooms Do not talk to people you do not know Use the “block” feature to block messages from people you don’t want to talk to Be careful what you type! Anything you type can be copied and pasted and saved forever by another person.

E-mail Never open email from people you don’t recognize. Do not forward emails from others. Most email applications have spell check. Use it! Be careful to type the address correctly or it will never get to the right person! Do not open attachments unless you are expecting something from someone you know! Netiquette tip:

Games and Ratings http://www.esrb.org/ratings/ratings_guide.jsp Good explanation of how ratings are applied. Remember, if something feels uncomfortable, maybe it’s a good time to find something else to do. Don’t play games that are rated for older kids. Don’t encourage younger kids to play games that are not age-appropriate. Be a good role model.
