Test tube brush Cleaning test tubes

Test tube tongs Holding one test tube

Watch glass Small chemical reactions & for covering beakers

Well plate Comparing small scale reactions

funnel Transfer a liquid from a large container to a small container

Petri dish Small reactions that need to be covered

spatula Picking up tiny amounts of solid chemical

scoopula Picking up small amounts of solid chemical

forceps Picking up one small piece of solid

Rubber stoppers Closing or plugging a container

Volumetric flask Diluting solutions

Erlenmeyer flask Mixing and heating chemicals; Storing chemicals

Beaker Mixing and heating chemicals

Stirring rod Stirring chemical solutions

Plastic pipette Adding small amounts of chemicals

Ring stand Used in conjunction with other lab equipment

Iron ring Holding lab equipment above the burner

Wire gauze Placed on top of the iron ring

Bunsen burner heating

Pipestem triangle Holding crucible or evaporating dish above the burner

Crucible and cover For heating solid chemicals

Evaporating dish Drying out wet mixture/solid

Crucible tongs For picking up a hot crucible or evaporating dish

Insulating pad To put hot stuff on

Beaker tongs To move hot beakers

Wing tip To spread the flame on a Bunsen burner

Striker ignite a Bunsen burner

Utility clamp To secure lab equipment to the ring stand

Thermometer Measure temperature

Hotplate Heating chemicals without using an open flame

Heating with burner 1.Flame should be 2-3 inches high, blue with a lighter blue inner cone 2.Tip of flame should be 1-2 inches below wire gauze 3.2 nd iron ring to stabilize beakers

Water bath 1.Heats the test tube evenly 2.Can be done with hotplate or burner 3.Water level in beaker should be higher than the water level in test tube 4.Utility clamp used to stabilize test tube

Cooling hot equipment 1.Hot glass – use insulating pad and leave on lab bench until it is cool enough to touch, then run it under warm water, wipe dry with paper towel 2.Hot metal – pick up cool part and run hot part under cool water, wipe dry with paper towel

Wearing goggles Goggles should already be on and covering eyes (not forehead or neck) before you walk past the sink & dryrack in the back of the room!
