Photography Project The A Team.

Introduction… Connotation and denotation are often described in terms of levels of representation or levels of meaning. Roland Barthes adopted from Louis Hjelmslev the notion that there are different orders of signification (Barthes 1957; Hjelmslev 1961, 114ff).Barthes 1957Hjelmslev 1961, 114ff The first order of signification is that of denotation: at this level there is a sign consisting of a signifier and a signified. Connotation is asecond-order of signification which uses the denotative sign (signifier and signified) as its signifier and attaches to it an additional signified. Semiotics and photography: ‘a photograph is always invisible it is not it that we see’ – Barthes.

Wisdom of Old Age. Semiotics is an complicated process, which originates from Greek origin ‘semeion’ which means sign. If semiotics is broken down to the original concept by De Saussure, who studied the signifier (concept) and the signified (meaning) semiotics can be easily understood. for example of this the connotation of a dog can have many different interpretations depending on the individual and social class – some may believe them to be cute, cuddly and mans best friend others may find them scary or aggressive. If we use this concept and adapt it to the themed images of The Wisdom of Old Age, we have collected as a group then the meanings and connotations of each image can be explained in detail.

1. Wisdom begins with wonder.

2. The first half is preparation.

3. The passing of wisdom.

4. Love never dies from old age.

Young, Foolish, and Proud.
