Write up of the flipcharts from the Easy access IP session Ian Tracey STFC

Metrics Pro Increase the number of deals that will be done Simpler and lighter process, saving effort Increase visibility of the TTO Show what the institute does for society More revenue for the institute via – Industrial Collaboration – Sponsored PhD’s – Etc.. Cons More deals to track over time Money per patent decreases – Revenue stays the same – Number of live patents increases – Might want to consider abandoning patents

Explotation Pro More R&D work from industry – To develop ideas especially for projects that are too advanced to be grant funded – This is a new funding stream Likely to have more industrial partners who could be partners on new grants Cons The researcher has to be available to industry, and it could be for work he is no longer interested in Exclusive cf open Conflict between a CERN model and a national model No direct cash returns ie no royalties We could give away the next Google

Process Saves on the commercialisation effort The TTO is seen to be visible, modern approachable and doing its job Paid for public money for national industry Inline with academic mission – Public knowledge – Indirect increase of the countries wealth and thus tax take You encourage industry to have more confidence in the academic sector

How might you decide on easy access Well staffed TTO’s – Might be concerned over job loss due to simpler approach Under staffed TTO’s – Happy to have a reduced workload No reward but recognition – Funders are happy with the “Impact” Patent costs still need to be funded.
