1 Coral Reefs By: Stephanie Bowens

2 What are they ? Coral reefs are structures underwater that are made from calcium carbonate. Most of the coral reefs are made from stony corals which have polyps. Often called the rainforest of the sea , has one of the most diverse ecosystems on earth. About 25% of all marine life live on coral reefs . They are usually found in shallow places in tropical waters.

3 How they form Most coral reefs formed themselves after the last glacial period . Some grew to slow and became drowned reefs. Later on , life formed around them . The Great Barrier Reef shows an example of a reef growing on a continental shelf. Its apoximately 20,000 years old . Healthy tropical coral reefs grow horizontal for 1-3 centremetes per year

4 Global Warming Effects = (
The sea level rising , rising pH levels and ocean acidification is closely associated with greenhouse gases. In % of the coral reef died due to rising ocean temperatures. Global warming also affects the life around the reef. The temps might also be too high for them also . Reefs are now endangered and are being protected .

5 A lil bit of Biodiversity !
Near the coral reef, there is a vast variety of marine wildlife that will be seen. They are some of the most productive eco-systems . They can be homes to sponges, seabirds, shrimps , lobsters, starfish , fish , sea turtles and sea snakes. Over 4000 species of fish live around the coral reef.
