1 7.2 Properties of Exponential Functions

2 Transformations: Ex) Find the transformations of from the parent function

3 Ex) The isotope Hg-197 is used in kidney
scans. It has a half-life of hours. After that time, half the isotope will have decayed. Write the exponential decay function for a 12-mg sample. Find the amount remaining after 72 hours.

4 Ex) The isotope Sr-85 is used in bone scans.
It has a half-life of 64.9 days. Write the exponential decay function for a 8-mg sample. Find the amount remaining after 100 days.

5 Practice Exponential Regression (example 3 – p445).

6 Irrational base e Ex) Evaluate directly and using tables

7 Continuously Compounded Interest
(THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS ANNUALLY COMPOUNDED INTEREST WHICH USES THE EXPONENTIAL GROWTH/DECAY FORMULA)

8 Ex) Suppose you won a contest at the
start of 5th grade that deposited $3000 in an account that pays 5% annual interest compounded continuously. How much will you have in the account when you enter high school 4 years later?

9 Ex) Suppose you want to save $6000
for college in 5 years. How much should be put into an account that pays 5.2% annual interest compounded continuously?

10 Ex) How long would it take to triple your
principal in an account that pays 6.5% annual interest compounded continuously?
