FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE Language used by writers to produce images in readers' minds and to express ideas in fresh, vivid, and imaginative ways.

STYLE o The distinctive way in which a writer uses language. Ranges from how they put sentences together to their choice of vocabulary and use of literary devices.

METAPHOR o A comparison between two things that are basically not alike. o In the comparison, one thing becomes another. o Examples: o When I was grounded my home was a prison. o The silence during the Our Town test was music to our ears. o You could be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare.

SIMILE o A comparison between two things that are basically not alike using “like” or “as” to make the comparison. o Examples: o You make me smile like the sun…sing like a bird…spin like a record… o Siblings fight like cats and dogs. o Without my glasses I am as blind as a bat.

PERSONIFICATION o The act of giving human qualities to something that is not human. o Examples: o The city was sleeping as I took my 3A.M. walk. o The wind whispered softly in the night. o Love bites, love bleeds It's bringin' me to my knees Love lives, love dies It's no surprise Love begs, love pleads

ALLITERATION o The repetition of similar consonant sounds within a phrase or sentence. o Examples: o How much wood would a woodchuck chuck If a woodchuck would chuck wood? A woodchuck would chuck all the wood he could chuck If a woodchuck would chuck wood. o “Little darling, It's been a long cold lonely winter”

REPETITION o The act of repeating words or phrases for dramatic effect. o Example o “I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam I Am. I would not like them in a house…” o “We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end.” o “And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed…

SENSORY DETAILS o Images and/or details that emphasize our senses. o sight, sound, smell, taste, and/or touch. o Example: o The trash has been sitting there so long that the smell overpowers everything else. It smells like feet mixed with B.O. o I took a bite, and the sticky sweetness of the jelly made my mouth water. o I pulled the itchy wool blanket over my head.
