7. Bay of Pigs Invasion Cuban exile’s attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro, the dictator of Cuba. Fight between US government and Castro led President Eisenhower to break off relations with Cuba in 1961. Exiles were backed by US, and Castro was backed by USSR.

8. Lawrence of Arabia Film based on life of T.E. Lawrence. Shows his experiences in Arabia during World War I. Themes include Lawrence’s emotional struggles with the personal violence that go along with war and his personal identity.

9. British Beatlemania Described the intense fan frenzy for the Beatles during their early years in the 1960’s. Became common in the United States after the Beatles performed on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964.

10. Ole Miss James Meredith was the first African American student to attend Ole Miss. His goal was to put pressure on the Kennedy Administration in support of civil rights. Meredith organized and led a civil rights march From Memphis, Tennessee to Jackson, Mississippi.

11. John Glenn First American to orbit the Earth and was the third American in space. Was a senator from Ohio. Received a Congressional Space Medal of Honor. Was inducted into the astronaut hall of fame in 1990.

12. Liston Beats Patterson World Title fight in Chicago, Illinois. Was the third fastest knockout in boxing history. Liston learned to box in prison and was the prison champion.

13. Pope Paul Pope from June 21 st, 1963-August 6 th, 1978. He fostered improved ecumenical relations with Orthodox, Anglicans and Protestants, which resulted in many historic meetings and agreements. Took on the name Paul to indicate a renewed worldwide mission to spread the message of Christ.

14. Malcolm X An African American Muslim minister, public speaker, and human rights activist. While in prison Malcolm X become a member of the Nation of Islam. He was assassinated by three members of the Organization of Afro-American Unity.

15. British Politician Sex Refers to a political scandal in 1963 that involved The British Secretary of State for War, John Profumo, and a 21 year old girl named Christine Keeler. Rumors were spread about an affair between these two. The relationship between these two worried the government and the people of Britain.

16. JFK Youngest President of the United States. Conducted the Bay of Pigs Invasion of Cuba. Was involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis. He continuously helped with NASA during the space race of the Cold War with USSR. He was assassinated by Roy Lee Oswald in 1963.

17. Blown Away A 1994 film about an Irish terrorist who escaped from his cell in a castle prison in Northern Ireland. It starred Jeff Bridges and Tommy Lee Jones.
