2 THE FRENCH COLONIES The French king sent an another expedition of his people to Louisiana In 1699, Pierre Le Moyne and Jean-Baptiste reached the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico In 1712, the French king made Louisiana a proprietary colony In 1717, John Law, a Scottish banker, became Louisiana's owner In 1722, New Orleans, one of the colony’s first towns became Louisiana’s capital. By 1763, there were only 80,000 French colonists living in New France, an area stretching from Canada to Louisiana. Jean Baptiste

3 WHY FRENCH & DUTCH SET UP COLONIES FRENCH COLONIES They wanted wealth that came from the fur trade. The French king wanted to increase power by encouraging merchants to start colonies. DUTCH COLONIES Built settlements in their own colony, called New Netherland. Their aim in establishing a colony was to gain profits from the sale of furs to Europe.
