Refraction Refraction – the bending of a light wave due to a change in speed as it travels from one medium to another. The following slides will guide you through the refraction of light through various shapes of glass: block, convex lens, and concave lens.

Refraction of light If the light slows down…air to glass: – The light will bend towards the normal line – Angle of incidence is greater than the angle of refraction – i > R If the light speeds up…glass to air: – The light will bend away from the normal line – Angle of incidence is less than the angle of refraction – i < R If i = 0° then no bending occurs and R = 0°
