who someone is : the name of a person : the qualities, beliefs, etc., that make a particular person or group different from others

2 Ayn Rand's Anthem is based on a society where the concept of an individual identity has been eliminated. Anthem

3 People construct their identity through internal processes or by belonging to a group, and combined with a person's preference to a type of control, they can be defined by four distinct identity types: leader, follower, independent and drifter.  In the general field of social sciences, identity can be more loosely defined as how someone perceives themselves and how they are perceived within a group or affiliation.

4 The first type of identity is individual identity
The first type of identity is individual identity. This approach looks at the things which give you a sense of who you are. This second type of identity is known as a social identity. This type of identity offers little choice because it’s imposed through the concept of social roles. Social roles are best understood as a way of behaving which is imposed on a social group.  5 types of identity

5 Collective identity is the term which describes any identity which is shared by social groups.
Some sociologists argue that people have more complex identities, these are known as multiple identities. Those sociologists who prefer this explanation of identity argue that the formation of identity is far more complex as issues surrounding things like social-class, gender, ethnicity, age, nationality are all very influential. More importantly it’s not just one of the above but it could be a combination of factors. 5 types of identity

6 The last type are those that are different from ‘normal’ people
The last type are those that are different from ‘normal’ people. This is termed as having a stigmatized identity. A stigma is any undesirable physical or social characteristic. Disabled people are stigmatized because their disability is seen first and foremost. Consequently people treat people with a stigmatized identities with contempt by poking fun at them, ignoring them or refusing to employ them. 5 types of identity
