First Aid CPR and Cardiac Arrest
2
What is CPR? CPR means cardiopulmonary resuscitation First aid technique to restore heartbeat and breathing Someone collapses at the park. You want to give first aid (because you’re a GOOD SAMARITAN!)…What do you do? Make sure the scene is safe Approach the victim, ask “Are you okay?” - If they do not respond, shake their shoulders and ask again! CALL 9-1-1 Check their ABC’s
3
ABC’s Do you know your ABC’s? A = Airway Are they choking on something? B = Breathing Are they breathing? C = Circulation Can you feel a pulse?
4
Airway Clear the airway! Place on hand on victim’s forehead and one hand on their chin Press on the forehead and lift the chin to tilt the victim’s head back The mouth will open and the tongue will move away from the windpipe
5
Breathing Keeping your hands on the victim’s head, turn your head and see if the chest rises and falls Listen for sounds of breathing and feel for exhaled air on your cheek
6
What if they are not breathing? Check the airway again Remove anything that may be blocking it Start CPR
7
Cardiopulmonary Arrest What is it? Cardio – dealing with the heart Pulmonary – dealing with blood Arrest – Stopping Which means…Stopping of normal circulation of blood due to failure of the heart
8
