Installing Hinges Created By M.Martin 9/05
2
Mark the hinge position on the door edge 150mm from the top of the door and 225mm from the bottom of the door
3
At the top marking, position the hinge wrong side up and directly below your mark
4
To mark the depth use either –A combination square –A marking gauge or –A butt gauge
5
Mark face of door to depth with your chosen tool
6
With your chisel, very lightly mark your line across the grain Be very careful chiseling length ways at edge
7
Chisel hinge recess gradually Chisel bevel should be facing down, so your lifting action will remove the timber pieces
8
On completion of the last process use the chisel paring across the base to achieve a flat surface Be careful not to brake the outside edge Repeat the process for your second or third hinge
9
Next is to mark the position on the jamb A good guide for clearance is to use a hinge for a space at the top Put simply, hold the door in position and mark jamb off your housing for the hinge
10
Remove the door, hold a hinge wrong side up on the door jamb or more accurately use a butt gauge Repeat chiseling process as for the door
11
Mark screw holes on door
12
Remove the hinge and drill pilot holes for the screws Be accurate
13
Reposition the hinge and insert screws into the pilot holes. Do not tighten the screws until all three are in place and the hinge is in the correct position. Repeat for second and or third hinge
14
Fix door in position on jamb
