“MYTH” What is “myth”? mythos (Greek, “authoritative speech; story; plot”) Myth is “a traditional story with collective importance” STORY - plot: beginning, middle, end - setting: time and place TRADITIONAL (trado, Latin, “hand over”) -anonymous in hypothetical original form(s) COLLECTIVE IMPORTANCE - Origins

SIGNIFICANCE Explains natural phenomena Entertainment Today many myths are referenced frequently TV shows, plays, movies Stories of adventure Provided comfort & reasoning A deity would rule over a specific part of life (the home, the water, the sky, farmland, war, etc.) 4

TYPES OF MYTH A. DIVINE MYTHS - main characters are gods and goddesses (abstract or anthropomorphic) B. (NON-DIVINE) LEGENDS -main characters are “aristocratic” humans C. FOLKTALKES - main characters are “common” humans and/or animals - novels and feature films

CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY Roman & Greek mythology Incredibly similar with different names Roman culture adopted from Greek Often times grouped together as the same God or Goddess 7
