Benefits of Academic Competitions & Programs Academic competitions can serve as strong motivators for students by providing an incentive to study and work hard. They can offer the types of experiences that foster the development of productive attitudes and work habits. Black History Essay Contest & Theodore Gibson Oratorical Competition The purpose of this contest is to enhance elementary and secondary school students’ writing skills while promoting an awareness of a particular Black History theme. This year’s was “Hallowed Grounds”. Theodore Gibson Oratorical Competition is to provide students with the opportunity to discover and refine their research, writing, and public speaking skills through a challenging competition. Congrats to last years winners: 1st Place- Robert Carr, grade 1, Melrose Elementary (K-2) 1st Place- Ryanna Bruce, grade 5, Poinciana Park Elementary (3-5) 1st Place- Harold Rivas, grade7, Hialeah Gardens Middle 1st Place- Jacob Herman, grade11, New World School of the Arts

the Model U.N. & We the People Model U.N.: A competition that provides students with a better understanding of the inner workings of the U.N. and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. We the People: Simulated competition that provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights by taking part in a simulated congressional hearing 2015-2016 Winners: 1st: Place: Bob Graham Educational Center: Teacher Sponsor- Ms.Jackeline Hernandez (6-8) 1st Place: Maritime & Science Technology Academy: Teacher Sponsor- Mr. Kevin Mullin (9-12)

Geography & History Bee The Geography and History Bees are academic competitions that challenge five-member student teams from participating schools to demonstrate their knowledge of geography and history. Last Years Winners: 1st Place - Coral Gables Preparatory Academy ( Elem. Geography ) 1st Place - St. Theresa ( Middle Geography ) 1st Place - Coral Reef ( SHS Geography ) 1st Place - Coral Gables Prep Academy ( Elem. History ) 1st Place - Miami Springs ( Middle History )
