Analysis of Sports Performance: Feedback SHMD 139 21/05/2012
2
Coaches Role Direct influence on lives’ of athletes. Teacher, trainer, motivator & instructor. Essential skills: Essential skills: – Management. – Communication. – Teaching. – Organization.
3
Performance Assessment Several ways to assess performance: Several ways to assess performance: – Individual (self-assessment). – Peer assessment. – Other observers: coach, teacher etc. Factors to consider when evaluating performance: Factors to consider when evaluating performance: – How well do they perform specific skills. – Are they using the correct technique? – Are they using appropriate tactics. Pg 301
4
Key Terms in Assessing Performance Observation: watching sporting performances. Analysis: deciding what has happened. Evaluation: the end product of observation & analysis, where decisions are made & feedback is given to the performer. Qualitative analysis: largely subjective (personal interpretation), therefore subject to bias/error. More knowledge = more valid observation. Quantitative analysis: Direct measurement of a performance/technique (Scientific). Pg 301
5
Methods of Assessment Video Analysis: Video Analysis: – Objective record of performance. – Playback – slow motion. – Shows skill execution, tactical efficiency, general performance evaluation. Pg 302
6
Methods of Assessment Notation: Notation: – Collecting data by hand. – Noting on a sheet of paper with pre-determined set of symbols. Pg 302 Player 1Player 2Player 3 CatchesIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII PassesIIIIIIIII TacklesIIIIIIIIIIII PenaltiesIIII
7
Biomechanical Analysis 4 Steps to improve technique: 4 Steps to improve technique: 1.Describe ideal model. 2.Record what your athlete is doing. 3.Compare the two & see what needs improving. 4.Instruct the athlete on how to improve. Pg 126
8
Coaching Feedback Clarity of information/Appropriate language: – Simple & understandable. Type of feedback: – Written List. – Verbal. – Demonstration. Positive/negative feedback: – Strengths/weaknesses. Evidence based feedback: – Base things on fact from analysis. Confidentiality: – Discuss weak points privately. – Feedback general – precise. Pg 126

Goal Setting Short term goals – next week Medium term goals – next month Long term goals – next season S M A R T S S pecific M M easurable A A chievable R R ealistic T T ime-constrained Pg 127
10
SM ART SPECIFIC SPECIFIC to what you want to achieve. Aspect of performance/fitness. Example: improve agility, speed or stamina etc. MEASURABLE MEASURABLE State figures. Example: improve 100m sprint (speed) by 2 seconds. Pg 127
11
SM AR T ACHIEVABLE ACHIEVABLE Must be possible to actually achieve goal. REALISTIC REALISTIC Be realistic in setting goals. Look at factors that may stop us achieving them. Pg 127
12
SMAR T TIME-CONSTRAINED TIME-CONSTRAINED Time frame for achieving goals – end of month/season/year. Pg 127
13
Coaching Diaries/Logbooks Log training sessions. Planning/evaluating. Guidelines: Guidelines: 1.Complete diary soon after coaching session. 2.Write down what happened in order. 3.Focus on what went well first. 4.Describe what needs improvement. 5.Action plan to develop what needs to be improved. Benefit: shows progress over a period of time. Pg 286
15
Communication Most important skill. Verbal & non-verbal (body language). Too much talking = confusion. Pace, tone, volume influence communication. Too much shouting = loss of respect from players. Must be able to listen to players’ opinions & interpret signs/signals from other players/officials.

Revision Questions 1.What are the 4 essential skills every coach needs to have?4 2.Define: a.Observation.1 b.Analysis.1 c.Evaluation.4 d.Qualitative analysis.3 e.Quantitative analysis.3 3. Differentiate between the two methods of performance assessment.6 4.List the 4 steps to improving technique.4 5.What does the word ‘SMART’ stand for?5 6.Write a short paragraph describing the correct way for a coach to give feedback. 10
