2 Early Man  Migration- Moving from place to place for better resources or living  Paleolithic Era-The earliest period of the stone age  Hunters and Gatherers-members of homo sapiens who spent many hours a day searching for food

3 Farmers and City Dwellers  Slash and Burn Farming- a system of farming which thick forestlands are cut and burned to prepare the soil for planting  Plow-A tool used to cut, lift, and turn over soil  Surplus-An extra supply

4 Mesopotamia  Irrigation-ways to move water to land  Bronze-A mix of tin and copper  Silt-soil and tiny rocks carried or deposited on the land by floodwaters

5 Egypt  Papyrus- a paper material made out of reeds pounded together with a rock  Pyramid-a structure made out of stone used as a burial chamber for Egyptian Pharaoh  Cataracts-rapids or waterfalls

6 Greece  League-a group of allies  Isthmus- a small strip of land connecting larger land areas  Cultural Borrowing-the process by which a culture takes ideas from other cultures  Harbors-a sheltered place with deep water close by

7 Rome  Aqueduct-a system of bridges and canals that carry water from a natural source, such as a river, to a town  Colosseum-A vast amphitheater in Rome  Concrete-A heavy, rough building material made from a mixture of broken stone or gravel, sand, cement, and water  Road-A wide way leading from one place to another
