The Colon A Colon may be placed after the salutation in a business letter. Dear Mr. Ryan: Dear Ms. Martin: Ladies and Gentlemen:

Use a colon between the hours and minutes when expressing time. Leave NO space before or after the colon. Class starts at 1:01 in the afternoon. You have to be at the meeting at 9:00 in the morning.

Use a colon after the words as follows or the following when several items are listed, or if the phrases appear within a sentence. Space two (2) times after the colon. In order to pass this class you will need to do the following: complete your assignments on time, come to class, and have a good attitude.

After Introductory Independent Clauses A colon is placed after an independent clause (sentence) when a clause or phrase that follows further explains the independent clause. Space two times after the colon. Tom caught a big fish : a eight pound bass. Sarah paid attention and got a good grade : a 100.

Before quotations that are preceded by independent clauses (sentences) When an independent clause (sentence) is followed by a quotation, a colon is placed after the independent clause. Space two times after the colon and capitalize the first word of the quotation. Justin heard the announcement: “Please report to the office.” Chris didn’t see the sign that hangs over the door: “Watch your step.”
