NT File Systems by Eunice Swinson Southeastern University Professor: Mort Anvari June 3, 2000
2
Introduction - Overview of NT History - Defining a file system
3
NT History 4 Developed by Microsoft in early 1980s 4 It was developed to run on top of MS- DOS operating system 4 Microsoft joined forces with IBM to create a more powerful DOS 4 NT resemble the UNIX operating system
4
NT History con’t 4 Microsoft split from IBM to work on more advanced 3.x version 4 Sales for Win 3.1 skyrocketed, but sales for NT 3.1 failed 4 In 1994, cost of PC dropped
5
Defining a File System 4 OS using to manage the data on a drive 4 Before installing Windows NT decide what system to use 4 FAT - File Allocation table 4 NTFS - New Technology File System
6
Choosing a file System 4 FAT has four components- boot record, FAT, directories, and data files 4 NTFS has 64-bit entries and core master file table 4 FAT is backward compatible with DOS and Windows 95 4 NTFS is more fail-safe; more secure; and more efficient for large hard drives
7
FAT 4 Supported by DOS, OS/2, Windows 95 and Win NT 4 Can be converted to NTFS at any time 4 Less overhead than NTFS, works best with hard drives <500 MB 4 Maximum partition size of 4GB
8
FAT con’t 4 Does not support file compression 4 No local security available 4 Does not support Macintosh files 4 Does not support NetWare file/permission during migration
9
NTFS 4 Local security is available 4 Supports Macintosh files 4 Supports NetWare file/permission during migration 4 It supports large-volume drives
10
NTFS 4 Only supported under the NT Operating System 4 Can’t be converted to FAT
11
NT Security and Permission 4 Way to control resources user and group accounts 4 Required logon based on given permission 4 Two types of of security - local and network 4 Local governs user to log on where resources are located
12
NT Security and Permission con’t 4 Permission can be applied to file or folder 4 Users can access resources over the network
13
Other File Systems 4 Virtual File Allocation Table (VFAT) 4 Network File System (NFS) 4 Virtual Storage Access Method (VSAM) 4 High Performance File System (HPFS)
14
Using Workgroups and Domains 4 Workgroup are a logical group of computer and users that share resources 4 Domain is a group of networked computers that share a centralized directory database of user account information and security 4 PDC stores and controls database called directory database or SAM 4 Each computer with a backup directory database is called BDC
