Do Now 2-21-12 In your journal on page 19, answer the first two questions: 1) Lets recall the definition of a model- 2) What kind of models did you create in the black box activity?

The HUMDINGER- Part 1 I have a device that I would like to share with you. Pay attention and see how the device works. I have a device that I would like to share with you. Pay attention and see how the device works. What happens when the string is pulled? What happens when the string is pulled? What happens when the string is released? What happens when the string is released?

Essential Question Can you make a model of a device you cannot see that hums when you pull the string and dings when you let it go?

Humdinger- Part 1 Humdinger- Part 1 When mathematics, words or drawings are used to explain how something works or how it is built, it is called a CONCEPTUAL model. That means the model is an idea or a concept, not something real. In this investigation you will make PHYSICAL- real models that work and can be tested and compared to the real Humdinger.

Humdinger- Part 1 Get into your groups. Have a new getter retrieve your kit of materials from the back of the room. Work with your teammates to make a product that will “hum” when you pull the string and “ding” when released. Be ready to share some of your findings.

Humdinger-Part 1 Scientist that are working together to accomplish the same goal COLLABORATION, that is they share their ideas and work on problems at conventions and in journals. They might choose to use someone else’s idea, improve on it, or come up with a completely different model. Assemble in your group and pick one group member to report your group’s findings to the class.

Humdinger- Part 1 Do Now 5-1-30 Write a summary in the space provided at the top of page 22.

Humdinger-Part 1 A Technological Advance: Circuits What is a circuit? Circuit- the continual path of electricity that runs from the D-cell to the motor and back to the D-cell. Can you name places where you mind find circuits in your everyday life???

Humdinger- Part 1 DO NOW On page 23 of your journal. Teacher explanation of a Switch. A switch is a device that opens and closes a circuit. After experimenting today, you should have a drawing of your model so far on page 23.

Do Now 5-3-12 On page 23, make a drawing of your humdinger so far. Have your homework out and ready for me to check.

Hum Dinger- Part 1 Do Now- 5-4-12 Complete Vocabulary on page B in yellow packet. Conceptual model Conceptual model Physical model Physical model Collaborate Collaborate Circuit Circuit Switch- a device used to open or close a circuit Switch- a device used to open or close a circuit Lever- a simple machine. A lever bar exerts a force to move a load by turning on a pivot or falcrum Lever- a simple machine. A lever bar exerts a force to move a load by turning on a pivot or falcrum

Humdinger- Part 1 Content/Inquiry Entries How can I get the motor to run? Hint: what did you have to make for the motor to run? How can I turn the hum on and off? Hint: what kind of device did you have to make to turn the hum on and off?

Humdinger-Part 1 Science Story Read the story “ Simulations” on page 17- 20 Read the story “ Simulations” on page 17- 20 Complete the questions on pages 26 &27 for homework. Complete the questions on pages 26 &27 for homework.

Last DAY Today is the last day for the construction of your humdinger Today is the last day for the construction of your humdinger Lets begin with our last mini-convention before we complete the investigation. Lets begin with our last mini-convention before we complete the investigation.
