2. Ladder Q & A Q: Can I work off an extension ladder? You can only work off an extension ladder if a proper risk assessment has been completed and an exemption has been approved by the area manager using SPI 99. Q: What can I use an extension ladder for? An extension ladder is to be used to gain access to another working level, working platform, or building floor/roof top Q: The SPI states that ladder frames are to be made of non-conductive material and it also states that rungs may be made of conductive material. Is this correct? The frame and rungs are two different components of the ladder, the frame is what needs to be non-conductive. Q: Can I work off of a step ladder? 3. Ladder Q & A Q; I will be changing lights all shift, this is longer then 30 minutes? The 30 minute duration is per task. Q: I will be working off a step ladder higher then 1.8m, do I require fall protection? Yes, fall protection is required when working above 1.8m. Q: How do I maintain 3 point contact while climbing a ladder with tools and or material? Many methods can be used such as, a tool bag/packsack, the use of a bucket tied to a rope or a partner handing tools or supplies to you. Note: Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum load posted on the ladder. Q: Do I need fall protection when traveling above 1.8m on an extension ladder? No, as long as you are able to use both hands and legs to ascend or descend the extension ladder.
