2
Poverty Poverty is a worldwide issue that anyone can fall victim to at any given point in time About 1.2 billion people worldwide live in an extreme poverty, which is living on less than $1 a day A “poverty spell” for a person can last as long as 20 years
3
Poverty contd. Around 80 million people worldwide skip a meal each day, just to make ends meet The poverty rate for children is higher than any other age group Poverty can cause major health concerns
4
Causes of Poverty In America the main cause of poverty is the recession In Mexico, location is a major cause of poverty In Africa warfare and corrupt government leaders are causes of poverty
5
Effects of Foreign Aid and Welfare Most aid doesn’t go to the countries that need it the most Foreign aid keeps corrupt government officials in power Foreign aid is expensive to send and it often leaves the countries who receive it in debt A lot of people believe that welfare has only made the poverty issue in America worse but without it many families wouldn’t be able to afford healthcare, housing or food for their families
6
Conclusion I believe that Americans should focus on poverty in their own country because foreign aid can lead to debt and corruption.
