V- Colonial Regions A) As the English colonies began to emerge, they began to develop into three distinct regions. 1) New England 2) The Middle Colonies 3) Southern Colonies

B) New England-Most living in New England were SUBSTANCE FARMERS- raised enough crops to feed their families. 1) They were SELF- SUFFICENT- needed little or no outside help to function 2) Created small farming communities usually based around the local church.

C) Middle Colonies 1) Largely settled by new IMMIGRANTS- people arriving from a foreign countries intent on settling in their new nation. 2) Commercial Farming- Their farmers were larger than New England’s and produced enough to sell on the market.

3) The Middle Colonies were home to the largest cities. a) New York City and Philadelphia b) These cities grew and prospered by being the largest SEA PORTS and trading centers. 4) Social rank was generally based on prosperity (how much money you made). a) Society ranks were very mobile

D) Southern Colonies- Southern life and culture was dominated by wealthy ARISTOCRATIC PLANTERS- 1) Land owners who kept a strict society based on which family you were born into.

2) These Planters created the system of PLANTATION FARMING growing cash crops. a) The South grew tobacco, indigo, and rice on their plantations
