What is a Mixture? When you combine two or more substances together, if no chemical reaction occurs then it is called a mixture Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds More About Mixtures: Any changes you observe in a mixture are only physical changes… no new substances are formed. Mixtures can be fairly easily separated back into the individual ingredients (Note: compounds can not be easily separated) EXAMPLES: Salt Water, Blood, Milk, Cement, Soup, Salad, Tea, Soft drinks (Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, etc. ), Tacos, Hamburgers, Kool-Aid Drinks, Energy Drinks, Pizza, etc Science

More Mixture Examples Red Bull …is merely a combination of water and other ingredients Air …is merely a combination of nitrogen, oxygen, & other gases Steel …is merely a combination of iron and carbon No chemical reaction occurs NOTE: A mixture may contain one or more compounds, as long as they do not react with each other (like Kool-Aid for example) Kool-Aid is a mixture… When you combine water (a compound) and Kool-Aid powder which has sugar (a compound), flavoring, & coloring) these items do not chemically react with each other. Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science

How do I know if something is a mixture? Two Ways: 1) Mixtures can be fairly easily taken back apart 2) If no chemical reaction (no chemical bonding) occurred when you combined the substances together, then it is a mixture How do I know if a chemical reaction occurred or not? If you don't see these, then it is probably not a chemical reaction No sound (no sizzle, bang, or boom) No smoke No fizzing or foaming No explosion No heat or light No precipitate is formed Note: These are common indicators of chemical reactions Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science
4
Is it a Mixture or a Compound? Summary: No chemical reaction=MIXTURE If no chemical reaction occurred when you combined two or more substances together, then it is called a mixture Notes SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds Science Summary: Yes to chemical reaction=COMPOUND if a chemical reaction happened when you combined two or more substances together, then it is compound. Reminder: If a chemical formula has more than one capital letter, then it is a compound (Examples: H 2 O, NaCL, C 6 H 12 O 6
