Ruiz was charged with murder for a crime he did not commit. He knew that any Filipino or Chinese during that time would have not had a fair trial if a Spaniard was killed. He decided to quietly depart and join the missionaries bound for Nagasaki in Japan. During that time Christians and missionaries are [sic] being caught, tortured, and killed because they were not allowed to preach anything about Christianity in Japan. The group was caught and was charged with insulting the Japanese religion. The shogun said that they would be freed if the promise to renounce their faith and say that they were wrong in preaching the gospel to the Japanese. They must also register their names under any sect of Buddhism. They were then given some days to think while they were imprisoned. While in prison, Ruiz and Lazaro began to learn more about the gospel from their priest companions. The group was caught and was charged with insulting the Japanese religion. Then, because they did not renounce their faith, they were tortured every single day so their faith would waver. They were hanged upside down with their heads submerged in the dark, deep, cold water until they almost drowned. Then the torturer would pull their heads out of the water and ask them to renounce their faith.. But they did not falter. Then their hands and feet were chained. The torturers asked Lorenzo if he would give up his faith in God. Then, because they did not renounce their faith, they were tortured every single day so their faith would waver. “No, no, I am a Christian! I will not give up my faith in God. I offer my life today. You can do anything with me, you can kill me but I will never turn my back on God. I shall die a Christian ….. And if I had a thousand lives, I would give them all to God.” Then they were brought to the top of Nishizaka Hill, now known as the mount of martyrs, on 9/29/1637. They were hanged and roped tightly upside down. The torturers sliced there bodies with knives so they would look ugly to those watching them. Ruiz showed the whole wide world what he valued most in his life: God. His Christian faith in God was so precious to him that he gave up his life in proclaiming his faith in God. DEFINITION DEFINITION OF THE 1 ST COMMANDMENT
15
The 1st commandment states, “I am the Lord your God. You shall have no other gods besides me” It means that the Lord God our Father is the only God whom we must adore and serve. Therefore, He must be above all our other interests and values. He must be at the center of our lives. When we become very materialistic – desiring to have lots of money and clothes or be popular in school-- we lose our focus on God. We may want to be in top if the class that we forget God and cheat during quizzes or other examinations. The 1st commandment states, “I am the Lord your God. The 1st comm. commands us to give God the highest priority in our life. We must also remember that God revealed by Jesus is the Blessed Trinity, the Christian image of God, Jesus, the begotten Son made man, reveals to us the eternal Father and his own unity with the father. The Risen Christ sends the Holy Spirit, the spirit who guides our conscience to always do what is good. We are baptized in the name of the holy trinity and when we pray, we make the sign of the cross to call on God our father, son, and Holy Spirit. 17
As adopted children of God our father, we have the duty to worship only the triune God. We must remember that the perfect image of God is his son, as seen in his life and sufferings. In reference to an Old Testament text, some people object to statues of Mary and the saints, and “carved images of God”. They forgot that God became man in the incarnation and that Jesus is the physical sign of the father. who has graced individual persons [Mary&saints] with the Holy Spirit. Thus, statues of Mary and the saints are not just carved images of God but serve as valuable helps to a person as he/she focuses on his/her prayer life. However, one must remember not to treat these reminders as idols endowed with some magical powers. The first commandment, not only for antiquity, but for dignity. This command, which deals with God the Almighty, must ever take precedence of every other. Other commandments deal with man and man, but this with man and his Creator. Other commands of a ceremonial kind, when disobeyed, may involve but slight consequences upon the person who may happen to offend, but this disobeyed provokes the wrath of God, and brings his ire at once upon the sinner's head. He that steal committee a gross offense, in as much as he has also violated this command; but if it were possible for us to separate the two, and to suppose an offense of one command without an offence of this, then we must put the violation of this commandment in the first rank of offences. This is the king of commandments; this is the emperor of the law; it must take precedence of all those princely commands that God afterwards gave to men. God created the world and everything in it. He is the one true God and He is to be number one in our lives. Nothing in our life should come before God. He wants to take first place in all you say and do. The “number 1” reminds us that God first commandment says nothing in our lives should come before Him. God created the world and everything in it. The First Commandment was first recorded by Moses, who wrote it down in Hebrew together with the other nine, in the second of his books, called Exodus. The five books of Moses are the basis of the so-called Old Testament. Hence, the First Commandment is the foundation of both Judaism and Christianity. In my meditations, followed by studies of original texts, I found, that the First Commandment (Exodus 20:3) recorded by Moses in Hebrew is mis-translated and hence mis-interpreted in all languages on Earth. "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and fourth generation of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments." One thing worth noting here is the absence of any insistence on monotheism here. God does not declare that he is the only god in existence; on the contrary, the words presume the existence of other gods and insist that they should not be worshipped. There are a number of passages in the Jewish scriptures like this and it is because of them that many scholars believe that the earliest Jews were monolatrists rather than monotheists: worshippers of a single god without believing that theirs was the only god who existed.
