2016-2017 Academic Calendar NISD District Education Improvement Council –Calendar Development and Recommendation In compliance with HB 2610 – amends TEC §25.081 –Effective 2015-2016 school year –Removes the 180 day, seven hour requirement of instruction –Requires 75,600 minutes of instruction –Allows a district to add minutes as necessary to compensate for minutes of instruction lost due to school closures caused by disaster, flood, extreme weather conditions, fuel curtailment, or another calamity –Public Schools cannot begin instruction prior to the fourth Monday in August or end the school year prior to May 15

Criteria used to develop calendar options –Educationally best for students –Current holidays –Professional development days –State and District Assessment dates –No student holiday prior to state assessment day –Minimum 75,600 minutes –189 teacher contract days –12 Staff Development days –Balance fall and spring semester as much as possible –Compatibility with surrounding school districts –Minimum 2 bad weather days 2016-2017 Academic Calendar

2016-2017 Academic Calendar Survey Comments: 12.6% did not support a longer school day 7.5% or less of respondents replied to other category comments Considerations: Educationally best for students 71% of Respondents supported ending 1 st semester prior to Winter Break Early release days
