2 What is the SIMD? The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation identifies small area concentrations of multiple deprivation across all of Scotland Relative measure ranking the 6,505 datazones in Scotland from 1 being most deprived to 6,505 being the least deprived

3 What should a Housing Domain measure? suitability of housing ? inadequacy of housing ? physical housing condition ?

4 SIMD 2004, 2006 and 2009 Housing Domain Persons in households without central heating (2001 Census) Persons in households that are overcrowded (2001 Census) Housing domain low weighting – only 2% in 2009

5 Requirements of data sources A significant count within each data zone (ruling out most survey data e.g. SHCS) A figure for each data zone which can be ranked 1 to 6,505 e.g. DZ ranked 1 has the highest percentage of ‘bad’ housing This ranking accurately reflects the standard of housing in each data zone i.e. those in DZ1 are actually the most ‘housing deprived’
