2 Punk -Origins Punk started in the mid 1970’s but became really popular in 1977. 9 Origins New wave started in the late 1970’s and gained popularity as punk’s popularity declined. Like punk, new wave projected a strong independence from the establishment, including major record companies and the government. New wave’s lyrics were socially aware dealing with various political issues, as well as more conventional pop themes. Many new wave artists went on to have successful careers as Pop artists. The New York club CBGBs was an important performance venue for many artists including Blondie, New York Dolls and Talking Heads developing their sound through frequent gigs. Many influences including punk; hard rock; reggae and funk. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUmcp1wo_lI Interesting documentary about the CBGBs club providing a context for the punk / new wave scene.
