1 Bell work: Pluralism is a situation in which people of different social classes, religions, races, etc., are together in a society but continue to have their different traditions and interests. How might our school be an example of pluralism? – Finish your simple and complex sentence worksheet if you haven’t already. Homework: – MyAccess! Essay due Friday at midnight. – Study for Unit 1 Vocabulary Quiz tomorrow. – Bring a book you plan to read for your Independent Reading Project to class with you tomorrow. 2 Simple Sentences A simple sentence, also called a main (independent) clause, contains a subject and a verb, and it expresses a complete thought. In the following simple sentences, subjects are in purple, and verbs are in green. – 1. Some students like to study in the morning. – 2. Juan and Arturo play football every afternoon. – 3. Alicia goes to the library and studies everyday. Note that sentence 2 contains a compound subject, and sentence 3 contains a compound verb. Simple sentences, therefore, contain a subject and verb and express a complete thought, but they can also contain compound subjects or verbs.

3 Compound Sentences A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction. Coordinating conjunctions are always preceded by a comma. In the following compound sentences, subjects are in purple, verbs are in green, and the coordinating conjunctions and the commas that precede them are in blue. – I tried to speak Spanish; my friend tried to speak English. – Alejandro played football, so Maria went shopping. – Jane likes Pizza Hut; however, George prefers Papa John’s. semicolon conjunctive adverb

4 Practice! Tell if the sentence is simple or compound. Put a star above the subject and circle the predicate (or verb). 1. The polio vaccine was developed by Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin. 2. My little brother Jake got a toy in his breakfast cereal. 3. We watched the baseball game, and we went for ice cream afterward. 4. A red car pulled up to the house, and a girl climbed out. 5.Once of the remotes controlled the stereo, and another controlled the television.
