The Four Stages of Plot Development Transition What is a Dangling Cause? Examples of Dangling Causes What is a Motif? Demonstration of Patterns of Motifs Conclusion Works Cited

Set-up Meet the characters See who they are The “double goal” structure is established Complicating Action Action goes in a new direction New situation that the protagonist must cope with Development Goals in place Many incidents that create action, suspense, and delay. Climax and Resolution Strait forward progress toward a resolution Builds steadily toward a point of high action Will the protagonist’s goals be achieved?? NOTHING NEW SHOULD BE INTODUCED!

When they are at the bar/tavern, all of the characters have been introduced, the Nazis attack– therefore setting up the obstacle.

Marion is dead/captured He still has to find the Ark Indy and Marion are trapped in a tomb with numerous deadly snakes

The Ark is opened by the Nazis What is inside kills the Nazis by fire Indy and Marion are saved because their eyes were closed

Dangling causes are lines, images, actions, that are planted early in the film and “come true” or become important later on in the film.

This is an example of a dangling cause because later on in the film Indy must face his fear in order to achieve his goal of finding the Ark.

She uses this game early in the movie to trick a man into losing a bet She uses her “talent” later to trick Dr. René Belloq into getting very drunk so she could escape.

When Marion is put down into the tomb, you see the dragon statue crack Later on when they are trying to get out Indy uses it to break the wall

Lines, images, actions, colors, or musical themes that are woven throughout the film in order to produce a coherent text.

If you listen you will hear… The Ark’s theme- when anyone mentions the Ark or something related to it shows up on screen it plays. 1. When the Ark is given to someone “who will look it over” which is really when they are storing it in the warehouse 2. When Indy lowers himself into the room/tomb 3. When they are walking with the Ark at the Nazi island

Red is used a lot through out this film Mostly dusty colors The red sticks out compared to the colors in the color palate
