3 Empathy vs. Sympathy Empathy – being aware of and sensitive to the feelings, thoughts, and experiences of others. Sympathy – when you feel sorry for someone or their circumstances, but may not necessarily understand what they are going through.

4 Show empathy by: telling the person what you have noticed –I can see you are upset. –I can understand why you are excited. a gentle touch on the arm, a hug, or a “high five” Develop awareness of other people’s feelings observe ask effective questions Self-awareness
