What is water pollution?
contamination of water by foreign matter such as micro-organisms, chemicals, industrial or other wastes, or sewage. Such matter deteriorates the quality of the water and renders it unfit for its intended uses

Sewage and other oxygen-demanding wastes
Infectious agents
Plant nutrients that can stimulate growth of aquatic plants
Exotic organic chemicals, including pesticides, various industrial products of other organic compounds

Inorganic minerals and chemical compounds.
Sediments consisting of soil and mineral particles
Radioactive substances from the wastes of Uranium and Thorium mining and refining, from nuclear power plants, and from the industrial, medical, and scientific use of radioactive minerals.

6. Why is there water pollution?
Occurs when a body of water is adversely affected due to the addition of material to the water
Point sources of pollution occur when the polluting substance is emitted directly into the waterway
Non-point source occurs when there is runoff of pollutants into a waterway, for instance when fertilizer from a field is carried into a stream by surface runoff

Include many chemicals that are dumped into water systems
Forms when moisture in the air reacts with nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide from factories and power plants that burn coal or oil
Nitric and sulfuric acids are produced, which fall to the earth with rain or snow

Consists of human wastes, garbage, and water that has been used for laundering or bathing
Agricultural chemicals and wastes
Chemical fertilizers and pesticides that have been put into the land are carried by rain water into streams
Cnimal wastes also cause water pollution

     drinking
     washing things and;
     cooking

nobody would want to take a bath
there would be nothing to cook with
there would be nothing to wash with
this may end life here on earth

 Water purifiers will:
be sold more than before
people will depend on it
people will throw more trash because of the presence of a filter
   Taking no action when this happens is bad!

13. How do we deal with water pollution?
Primary treatment- grit removal, screening, flocculation, and sedimentation
Secondary treatment- oxidation of organic matter by means of biologically active sludge, which is filtered out
Tertiary treatment- advanced biological methods of nitrogen removal
