Alliteration A word that repeats the leading consonant throughout a sentence or a phrase. Example: She sells seashells by the seashore

Ballad A poem that tells a fairly simple story Example: Chorus The up spoke the Cook of our gallant ship, And a greasy old Cook was he; “I care more for my kettles and my pots, Than I do for the roaring of the sea.”

Characterization The method to reveal the personality of a character Example: Describing what the character looks like Telling what the character says.

connotation and denotation Connotation- The associations that are connected to a certain word Denotation- The literal meaning of a word in the dictionary example: Denotation- Stop (even without words, we recognize the meaning from the shape and color) Connotation-Risk (accident or ticket)

dialogue Conversation between characters Example: I wasn’t planni

fable A tale designed to illustrate a moral lesson Example: "A crow was sitting on a branch of a tree with a piece of cheese in her beak when a Fox observed her and set his wits to work to discover some way of getting the cheese.

figurative language A way of saying one thing and meaning something else. Example: “I move fast like a cheetah on the Serengeti.”

flashback event or scene taking place before the present time Example: A movie Like “The Sandlot”

hyperbole When an exaggeration or overstatement occurs. Example: I could eat a horse.

imagery A word which appeals to one or more senses. Example: I took a walk around the world to. Ease my troubled mind I left my body laying somewhere In the sands of time I watched the world float to the dark Side of the moon I feel there is nothing I can do

inference A judgment based on reasoning. Example: A diagram.

irony The result of an action is the reverse of what the actor expected. Example: Water, water, every where, And all the boards did shrink; Water, water, every where, Nor any drop to drink.

metaphor A figure of speech when its made between two unlike quantities. Example: Its raining cats and dogs.

Oxymoron A contradictory term. Example: Bittersweet, alone together, open secret

personification A speech in which nonhuman is giving. Example: my computer hates me The camera loves me Wind yells while blowing

Simile A speech that takes the form of a comparison. Example: My stomach is growling like a bear He was fast as lightning
