Genres Realistic fiction although untrue, could actually happen. Some events, people, and places may even be real. Science fiction is fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets Fantasy is a genre that uses magic and other supernatural forms as a primary element of plot, theme, and/or setting. Many works within the genre take place on fictional planes or planets where magic is common. Folklore is the traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community, passed through the generations by word of mouth

A visual introduction to Ireland! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htyHUX7Wg9U

Group Activity! Your job is to come up with at least three facts about your topic which you will share with the class. I suggest dividing tasks up amongst your larger group to cast a wider net. Write your facts down on your KWL worksheet.

Things to think about How does the combination of Ireland and these Faeries set up your idea of the story? Does Eoin Colfer's background make sense in context of him writing this story? Does knowing this information make you more or less interested in reading the book? Do you think we could achieve this same type of story here in the US? Do we have folklore like the Irish?

Homework Read Chapter 3. Handout: Please write down at least 1 trait for Holly and a piece of contextual evidence that demonstrates it. NOTE: This is the same as the Artemis sheet! Do not try and complete this yet! We will be working on it as we go!
