1 The Origin of Species Darwin began writing a multi- volume book compiling evidence for evolution and explaining how natural selection might provide a mechanism for the origin of species Darwin coined the term “evolution” and to this day biologist use the term to define cumulative changed in groups of organisms through time

3 Support of Evolution The theory of evolution states that all organisms on Earth have descended from a common ancestor

4 Fossil Records Fossils provide a record of species that lived long ago  supplying some of the most significant evidence of evolutionary change Fossils also show some species, such as the horseshoe crab, have remained unchanged for millions of years

5 Archaeopteryx One of the first birds has characteristics that classify it as a bird, but also has reptilian characteristics Feathers of modern birds Teeth and bony tails of reptiles

6 When studying transitional fossils researchers consider two major classes: Derived traits and Ancestral traits Derived traits are newly evolved features, such as feathers, that do not appear in the fossils of common ancestors Ancestral traits are more primitive features, such as teeth and tails, that do appear in ancestral forms

7 Comparative Anatomy Homologous structures are anatomically similar structures inherited from a common ancestor

8 Vestigial structures are structures that are the reduced forms of functional structures in other organisms

9 Analogous structures can be used for the same purpose and can be superficially similar in construction but are not inherited from a common ancestor

10 Comparative embryology Comparative embryology shows that stages in embryonic development may share several developmental features Vertebrate embryos, have a tail and paired structures called pharyngeal pouches. In fish the pouches develop into gills. In reptiles, birds and mammals, these structures become parts of the ears, jaws and throats

11 Geographic Distribution Evolution is intimately linked with climate and geological forces, especially plate tectonics, which helps explain many ancestral relationships and geographic distributions seen in fossils and living organisms today Darwin’s study of the distribution of plants and animals around the world in a field of study is now called biogeography

13 Adaptation An adaptation is a trait shaped by natural selection that increases an organism’s reproductive success The better an organism is adapted to its environment, the greater its chances of survival and reproductive success

14 Camouflage are morphological adaptations that allow them to blend in with their environments
