Photosynthesis Photosynthesis Grade 7 Science Mr. Genovese Grade 7 Science Mr. Genovese

What is photosynthesis? Process plants use to make their own food Plants’ leaves contain chlorophyll Chlorophyll (green color) makes photosynthesis possible Autotrophs  Heterotrophs

Food Chain

The chlorophyll absorbs the sunlight.

The sunlight is combined with water, Carbon Dioxide and nutrients from the soil. CO 2

Photosynthesis Stomata on the underside of plant leaves take in carbon dioxide 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O --  C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 The sugar is stored by the plant and the Oxygen is released through the stomata

O2O2

Plants and animals need each other to survive.

Animals including humans make the CO 2 (carbon dioxide) plants need. They (the plants) make the O 2 (oxygen) and food we need.

Cell Respiration The process in which cells obtain energy from glucose Cells break down the food they have stored and use the energy *Does not necessarily require oxygen

Two Stages Stage One: the Cytoplasm –Enzymes break down glucose in the cytoplasm without oxygen, little energy released Stage Two: Mitochondria –Mitochondria combine ATP with oxygen to release great amounts of energy

Respiration Equation C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 --  6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + Energy Where do the cells get this glucose from to produce energy? What do you notice about this equation?

Photosynthesis and Respiration

Fermentation Have you ever run as fast as you could for as long as you could? How did your muscles feel after? What you felt was the build up of lactic acid, or fermentation in your muscles Fermentation requires no oxygen to produce energy

Two Types of Fermentation Alcoholic Fermentation –Occurs because of yeast – a bacteria that feeds on sugars and produces carbon dioxide gas Lactic Acid Fermentation –Occurs in your muscles when doing anaerobic exercise –Runners hit “The Wall”

Fermentation
