Lesson Starter: Individual Name 3 plants used for food Name 2 plants used for medicine Name 3 plants used for materials Why is it important that we study plants? (what might we discover from them?)
2
Photosynthesis
3
Plant food.. Unlike us- Plants don’t eat. Green plants are able to make their own food This process is called PHOTOSYNTHESIS
4
Photosynthesis Photosynthesis only happens in GREEN plants The process happens inside the leaves of green plants (the food factory) The green pigment CHLOROPHYLL inside the CHLOROPLASTS traps sunlight which provides the ENERGY for the process The plant uses the energy to take simple chemicals and change them into food (to give the plant energy for growth and repair)
5
Going into the plant.. Plants take in water (from where?) And Carbon dioxide- where from? Water Carbon Dioxide chlorophyll
6
Photosynthesis Water (through the roots from the soil) and carbon dioxide (from the air) enter the plant When LIGHT and CHLOROPHYLL are present- the WATER and CARBON DIOXIDE is changed into SUGAR and OXYGEN Sugar Oxygen
7
The equation for photosynthesis (copy into your printed notes) Carbon water Sugar oxygen Dioxide + Chlorophyll + Sunlight
8
Think of a cake.. What do you need to bake a cake? -Ingredients (RAW MATERIALS) What do we need to turn the ingredients into a cake? -Heat, a baking tin, the oven (essential requirements) What are we left with? - Our cake (PRODUCT)
9
In photosynthesis.. What is our RAW MATERIALS? -Carbon Dioxide and Water What are our essential requirements? -Light and chlorophyll What are our products? -Sugar (glucose) and Oxygen
10
The equation for photosynthesis Carbon water Sugar oxygen Dioxide + Chlorophyll + Sunlight Raw Materials Essential Requirements Products
11
The RAW MATERIALS are chemically changed into the PRODUCT The ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS do not become part of the product (the oven and tin aren’t part of your final cake)
12
Think.. What do you think would happen if we were missing anything from the equation?
13
Vital Materials If any one of the raw materials or the essential requirements are missing then NO PHOTOSYNTHESIS can take place
14
What happens next? The sugar is transported around the plant and is used for various processes within the plant The oxygen passes out of the leaves through the pores
